Hermeneutics is the science and methodology of Bible study interpretation. It particularly comes into play in passages where the interpretation may not be clear or intuitively obvious, when there's possible ambiguity or something paradoxical.

However, as the church began to grow, heresies came into the church, and to protect the church some of the church fathers had to begin to put together more exacting guidelines for Bible interpretation, or Hermeneutics.

The science of interpreting the Bible (or any piece of literature) is called hermeneutics. The word comes from a Greek word, hermeneuo, which means to interpret or to explain. Interpreting the Bible is not a simple process of reading what has been written.

If you should pursue the matter further and inquire of him how it is that he can understand the Bible, what principles of Hermeneutics he has applied to his study, he will not usually be able to tell you. The Bible is, from that point of view, like any other book.
