The word Hermeneutics means "the art or science of the interpretation of literature." In our case, Biblical literature is what we are interpreting. Most everyone understands that there are ways of figuring out what someone means by their words when they speak with you.

The goal of biblical hermeneutics is to ascertain as closely as possible the meaning intended by the original author. We want the interpreter to remain under the authority of the text instead of imposing his or her meaning on the text.
