Erosion control: Big bluestem is planted to stabilize soil. Rhizomes are typically 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface, while the main roots can extend downward to 10 feet. Big bluestem is also planted to provide aboveground protection against wind erosion.

Big bluestem, Turkeyfoot ... Big Bluestem is a warm season, perennial bunchgrass with blue-green stems 4-8 ft. tall. The seedhead is usually branched into three parts and resembles a turkey’s foot. Fall color is maroonish-tan.

The grass is green throughout much of the summer; the stem turns to blue-purple as it matures thus, the name bluestem.

Big Bluestem is a bunchgrass as tight tufts of culms are produced from these rhizomes. Cultivation: The preference is full sun, moist to slightly dry conditions, and a fertile loam or clay-loam. Other kinds of soil are tolerated, including those containing sand and gravel.
