Garry Kimovich Kasparov was born as Garry Vajnshtejn on April 13, 1963 in Baku Azerbaijan (at that time a republic of Soviet Union). His mother was Armenian and his father was Jewish. On the July 1999 FIDE rating list, his ELO was 2851, the highest rating ever achieved.
