A modern-day water beetle in the family Hydrophilidae. This is probably the giant black water beetle (Hydrophilus triangularis). Water beetles are descendants of terrestrial insects and have evolved a number of adaptations for living in water.

There are several different ways of measuring the size of an insect, most people would consider the largest insect to be the bulkiest and in this case the champion insect is the Acteaom Beetle from South America the males of which can be 9cms long by 5cms wide by 4cms thick.

Our original Beetle Page got too big. No insect group has more species than beetles do. Beetles do have two pairs of wings, even though some species make the impression of being wingless. The front pair however is fully made of chitine, Many beetles are beautifully coloured, while others are entirely black.

Did you ever see a little red and black beetle crawling along your window sill? It was probably a lady beetle or lady bird beetle or just lady bug as Lady beetles, of course, can't sting, but they probably do taste bad. They also will "play dead" when in danger. Many predators will not eat an insect that doesn't move.
