Bog spavin is a chronic synovitis of the tibiotarsal joint characterized by distention of the joint capsule. Faulty conformation may lead to weakness of the hock joint and increased production of synovia. In such cases, both limbs are affected.

There are a couple of other types of spavin. A hard lump on the inside of the hock toward the front is called a "jack spavin". A "bog spavin" is a soft, sometimes even squashy, swelling higher on the hock, to the inside of the leg and toward the front of the hock.

Bog spavin is a cosmetic blemish of the hock area. Similar to thoroughpin and windpuffs, bog spavin is fluid swelling of a joint capsule not accompanied by heat, pain or swelling. In this particular instance, it is swelling of one of the joint capsules of the hock.

Hock problems such as bone spavin or bog spavin weight, or to hock conformation that puts part of the joint in the wrong place at the wrong time, resulting in uneven wear on the bone surfaces. Bone spavin can be caused by conformation faults such as sickle hocks or cow hocks, both of which put extra stress on the joint.
