This view of the dark cloud B68, a so-called Bok globule, is a false-colour composite based on a visible (here rendered as blue), a near-infrared (green) and an infrared (red) image. Since the light from stars behind the cloud is only visible at the longest (infrared) wavelengths, they appear red.

Astronomer A.D. Thackeray first spied the globules in IC 2944 in 1950. Globules like these have been known since Dutch-American astronomer Bart Bok first drew attention to such objects in 1947.

The Planetarium On The Playa (or my Bok Globule saga) ... I then spent a couple hours Tuesday night painting a sign for Bok Globule, despite the steady gusts. I was actually able to use the consistant wind to secure the art to the side of one of our cars!

Explanation: The dark spots in the above picture are not photographic defects but an unusual type of interstellar cloud known as a Bok globule.
