Botswana is regarded by most economists as one of Africa's major success stories. The country's economy was dependent almost entirely on livestock production until the 1970s, when it became an important exporter of diamonds and other minerals.

Diamond mining and tourism also are important to the economy. The sector is plagued by erratic rainfall and poor soils. Substantial mineral deposits were found in the 1970s and the mining sector grew from 25% of GDP in 1980 to 35% in 1997. Unemployment officially is 21% but unofficial estimates place it closer to 40%.

At independence in 1966 Botswana was one of Africa’s poorest countries. Today it is classified as an upper-middle-income country with a per capita income not much lower than South Africa’s. Thanks largely to abundant revenue from diamonds, it has been the fastest growing economy in the world over the past 25 years.
