One truss-type bridge with gussets, on 13th Street in Tacoma, was closed in late September and the state is weighing whether to repair or replace it. The state Route 529 bridge between Everett and Marysville, also a truss span, was rebuilt in the 1990s.

On a steel deck truss bridge -- the kind that collapsed in Minnesota -- the steel girders that fit together to hold up the bridge are connected with gusset plates. Oregon State University structural engineer Chris Higgins says gussets plates are the most efficient way to connect two parts, or members as he calls them.

Yesterday, while investigators were focusing on possible design flaws in gussets on the I-35W bridge, searchers found two more bodies in the interstate wreckage. The bodies were found by divers, according to authorities.

Most types of deck-truss bridges are no longer built, and no one is coming up with ways to fix them. Under traditional formulas, the Inner Belt Bridge gussets should have held up.
