Some hens will get off once a day, for up to an hour, to eat, bathroom and drink. Some will get off every few days, for just a few minutes. I have seen eggs get cold, and they do hatch. We prefer to move our broody hens to individual cages. When hens are brooding, they get off their nest once a day to eat and relieve themselves. We’ve found that other hens will hop into the broody hen’s nest and lay fresh eggs.

This protects her from being chased off the nest by more dominant hens, leaving the eggs to chill and die. It also keeps her from having eggs that won't all hatch on the same day. Move her gently at night and keep the new nest dark for the next day.

I just did a Google search for brooding hens and found you. My hen Louie, yes I have Huey, Louie and Dewey, the Three Wise Hens and one just started acting weird and then I guessed it was brooding. Thanks for all the suggestions.
