The full grown larva fills the entire abdominal cavity and its posterior spiracle partially protrudes into the bug's thorax where it fits into a respiratory funnel (Clausen (1940) discussed the host tissue origins of such a respiratory funnel).

Harlequin bug adults are 10 mm long, robust and shield-shaped. Adults are brightly colored in black and red-orange with distinct yellow markings. There is a black X on the thorax.
