Burial metamorphism occurs in deep basins where sediments or sedimentary rocks have accumulated. At a depth of about 10 kilometers, the confining pressure of the overlying material combined with geothermal heat is great enough to metamorphose rocks.

Burial Metamorphism; When sedimentary rocks are buried to depths of several hundred meters, temperatures greater than 300oC may develop in the absence of differential stress. New minerals grow, but the rock does not appear to be metamorphosed.

The word "Metamorphism" comes from the Greek: Meta = change, Morph = form, so metamorphism means to change form. In geology this refers ... The main minerals produced are the Zeolites. Burial metamorphism overlaps, to some extent, with diagenesis, and grades into regional metamorphism as temperature and pressure increase.

Burial metamorphism occurs when sediments or rocks are deeply buried and so subjected to increased pressure from the weight of the sediments above them. As the depth of burial increases, so does the temperature. Burial may occur separate from or as part of regional metamorphism.

Some very low-grade metamorphic belts have experienced burial metamorphism, a form of regional metamorphism in which new mineral growth is accompanied only by open folding, and pervasive fabrics are not developed.

Synthesis of the burial model with published experimental work puts constraints on the ancient thermal gradient that existed during burial metamorphism. For the peak of metamorphic adjustment fluid pressure appears to have been equal to load pressure.

Organic matter reflectance, illite crystallinity, and fluid-inclusion techniques have been used to evaluate burial metamorphic conditions for the lithostratigraphic successions that accumulated during the Cretaceous in the southern Benue trough and Anambra Basin of southern Nigeria.
