In the national income and product accounts (NIPA's), the difference between GDP and GDI is called the "statistical discrepancy"; it is recorded in the NIPA's as an "income" component that reconciles GDI with GDP (see NIPA table 1.9).

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether various disaggregated data can shed light on the possible sources of the statistical discrepancy. Our strategy is to use disaggregated data that sum to either GDP or GDI and compare the two in order to see where the discrepancy resides.
