The Cambrian Period marks an important point in the history of life on earth; it is the time when most of the major groups of animals first appear in the fossil record. It was once thought that the Cambrian rocks contained the first and oldest fossil animals, but these are now to be found in the earlier Vendian strata.

Trace fossils made by animals also show increased diversity in Cambrian rocks, showing that the animals of the Cambrian were developing new ecological niches and strategies -- such as active hunting, burrowing deeply into sediment, and making complex branching burrows.

Many Cambrian animals seem bizarre at first glance, but are actually members of groups that are still around today — such as the arthropods. In this investigation, you’ll study the fossils and reconstructions of five Cambrian animals and determine which were arthropods and which were not. As you've learned,

Other very important groups of Cambrian animals were the sponges, echinoderms (represented by a large number of different classes), and most interesting of all the soft-bodied echiurians, which were burrowing worm-like creatures (see right), which seemed to have been the most important and predominant carnivores of...

Natural selection in many cases favored larger size, for example, hard skeletons to provide structural support - hence, the Cambrian gave rise to the first shelly animals and animals with exoskeletons (e.g., the trilobites), and the size of many animals "exploded". Cambrian Animals of Utah*

Animals with hard-shells appeared in great numbers for the first time during the Cambrian. The continents were flooded by shallow seas. The supercontinent of Gondwana had just formed and was located near the South Pole.

Special thanks to the Canadian Geological Foundation for helping to make this exhibit possible at the Miller Museum. While most people know of the dinosaurs from a mere 70 million years ago, very few are aware that the Earth...
