They can not climb trees. Actually in a tree you would be safe from them. In land they can catch you running. they have even eatean pet dogs.

Good news: Alligators can’t run fast for long distances. They are cold blooded and use up their energy reserves quickly. Alligators can’t climb trees (at least vertical ones, a slanted tree maybe). Bad news: They can run VERY fast for short distances so you better have a good start.

I've tested out the advice we give regarding alligators with our alligator expert Tim Williams at Gatorland in Orland. Thankfully, I haven't had to jump into ... But don't try to climb a tree, whatever you do, because they can climb trees -- no matter what common mythology says -- and once you're up there, you're trapped.

I didn't until this week, when I spotted a young black bear scampering through the woods near El Capitan, in Yosemite. The bear ran toward a pine tree and then began ascending as if it were a squirrel. ... The Sci-Guy didn't know that black bears can climb trees? Obviously you're not a "natural sci-guy".
