Commercial preservatives will increase the life of cut flowers and should always be used. (Adding aspirin, wine, or pennies to cut flowers WILL NOT help to keep them fresh longer. Do not attempt a home brew concoction.) A floral preservative is a complex mixture ... A night temperature of 50° to 60° F will prolong blooming.

These preservatives are a combination of sugars, acidifiers and a mild fungicidal agent, all of which help extend the life of cut flowers. You can obtain these at your local florist or garden center. I was experiencing an experiment with my students on what substance would prolong the life of cut flowers. I decided to do this along with one of my classes. When we did this I was surprise with our results. Surprisingly aspirin prolonged the life of cut flowers.

Commercial cut flower preservatives usually contain sucrose, an acid, and a biocide. Aspirin could possibly act in either of the latter two capacities.
