Mules are not a species, they are a hybrid between two other species - Equus assinus (the donkey) and Equus caballus (the horse). A species is usually defined as a group of animals that can reproduce like examples, and the mule cannot reproduce.

Both male and female mules have all the correct "parts" but they are sterile and cannot reproduce. A VERY few (about 1 in 1 million) mare mules have had foals, but these are VERY, very rare. No male mule has ever sired a foal.

Because the resulting progeny is a hybrid, mules do not reproduce. Practically 100 percent of male mules are sterile. Female mules go into a "false heat," and in very rare circumstances they can become pregnant. When there is a cross between a female donkey (jenny) and a horse, the result is what is known as a "hinny".

Fun stuff about mules, trail rides, wagon trains, antiques and collectibles ... Mules are sterile and cannot reproduce. This does not affect the normal sex drive, though, and mules will breed, if not conceive. There have been stories through the years of mare mules giving birth, but to my knowledge, none have been substantiated.
