The ground CAN cause a fumble - it just doesn't happen because more often than not, the player is down by contact and the play is dead as soon as he hits the ground. If the ground causes the fumble, then chances are, the play ended before the ball came out.

The ground can't cause a fumble. So would someone please explain to me how the rule suddenly became different if it's a pass catch? A sometimes controversial rule is usually referred to as "the ground cannot cause a fumble." If a player is tackled and loses control of the ball at or after the time he makes contact with the ground, the ball is treated as dead and not in play.
