From time to time car may accelerate or slow down without any reason. Tachometer readings are changing (500-3000 RPM) if on parking or neutral. Smell of gas. If any one knows what is wrong with my car ( 1997 ... If any one knows what is wrong with my car ( 1997 Lumina ) let me know??? It idles really good at proper rpm but when I accelerate in park its like boggs out very breifly catches its rpm then boggs out again then catches back its rpm again...etc, etc, etc.

The problem arose after I took the car out of storage for the winter (my parents driveway). When the problem first ... I suspect that the problem maybe spark related now... maybe what ever advances my spark when I accelerate???? ;Like I said the problem is intermitant, so my base timing is fine. Roaddirt I feel from common sense that if the engine does not hesitate or misses when you accelerate the car it is not the engine. If the engine does drown when WOTing the car I would think the ... If the engine rough idles or misses the car will accelerate more or less ok and you can feel the engine failing directly.

I'm having problems with the drivability of my car. The engine misses when; I gently accelerate between 40 to 50 mph. If I give more gas and it shifts into a lower gear it seems to smooth out.
