At first, the bars of the coat of arms were either represented on the flag in a vertical or horizontal position. In the end, the horizontal position prevailed, becoming the official flag of the Catalan nation: four red bars alternating with five yellow ones, all of the same width.

The flag of Catalonia was "exported" to Aragon 1111. The original Aragonese flag seems to be the same as England's. The Catalan flag was in use in Aragon until 1709. Later it was readopted 1936 but supressed in few weeks by the Francoists.

The Catalan Flag, The Senyera, is thought to be one of the oldest flags of the world. It probably derives from 11th century or 12th century pre-heraldic symbols. In Catalan, senyera is also a synonym of bandera ('flag'), although normally people use the word to refer to the Catalan flag in particular.
