The play is set in Catfish Row, a rough African-American hamlet on the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1930s. The story centres around Bess, a prostitute, her sometime lover and pimp, Crown, and Porgy, a physically handicapped beggar who rides around on a goat cart and has long been in love with Bess.
