Chris, I am not sure if this applies to a 2 stroke because I have never experienced it, but just to add to the confusion here, a lean mixture causes backfiring. Anyone who has run out of gas on a motorcycle can tell you that you get some outstanding bangs from the exhaust just before it quits.
