types/causes ... Chromatic aberration comes in two types: axial and longitudinal. ... To reduce chromatic aberration, a higher quality optical device would use a special combination lens called an achromatic lens or achromat for short.

Chromatic aberration is a problem that is common to all types of optical lenses, including of course those used in cameras. You've no doubt read about it in camera reviews, and you may have seen example photos showing the effect, ... But what exactly is chromatic aberration, what causes it, and how can it be avoided?

11. What causes chromatic aberration in lenses? ... Chromatic aberration is caused by the dispersion of light as it passes through a lens. White light will split into a rainbow of colors as it passes through the lens, because the longer wavelengths of red light are refracted less than the shorter wavelengths of blue light.

This is caused by the fact that some colors of light are bent, or refracted, more than others after passing through a lens.

Longitudinal chromatic aberration:; This form of aberration causes different wavelengths to focus on different image planes. It corresponds to the tracking error. In a zoom lens, the amount of the longitudinal chromatic aberration varies as the lens is zoomed.

The fact that different colours travel distinct routes through photographic optics causes chromatic aberration (CA) on the image. As illustrated in Figure 1 different wavelengths have separate focal points. The axial distance between these points is called axial (or longitudinal) chromatic aberration.
