At the center of the cell is the cell nucleus. The cell nucleus contains the cell's DNA, the genetic code that coordinates protein synthesis. In addition to the nucleus, there are many organelles inside of the cell - small structures that help carry out the day-to-day operations of the cell.

Out of the many organelles in the cell, the nucleus is the largest. Surrounding the nucleus is the nuclear envelope. It is a double membrane that separates the nucleus from the rest of the cell. At some points along the nuclear envelope the inner and outer membrane are joined and they form very small pores.
