Common name century plant because when it was first brought into cultivation it was believed to flower once every 100 years. Infact they flower once every 25 to 50 years. This is the plant the Mexicans brew tequila from the leaves are packed with sweet sap.

The common name Century Plant is derived from the (incorrect) piece of folk belief that the Agave flowers only once every hundred years.
