Cerro Negro de Mayasquer, astride the Colombia-Ecuador border, is a stratovolcano with a caldera open to the west. Andesitic and dacitic lava flows are of possible Holocene age (Hall 1992, pers. comm.). Solfataras are found on the shore of a small crater lake.

Cerro Negro was born in 1850 and is the youngest volcano in central America. The volcano is composed of black scoriae and aa lava flows which have reached 4 km on NE. Eruption of Cerro Negro in August 1999 included ash emission and lava fountain.
