Although these emissions were attributed initially to an unusual form of gamma radiation, James Chadwick suspected a different origin. In 1932, he showed that the physical properties of the radiation could be explained by invoking a neutral particle of one atomic mass unit: the neutron (and modern nuclear physics) was born.

Chadwick, James: 1891-1974 by Jeanette Cain; James Chadwick discovered the neutron in 1932, resulting in the solution of the jig-saw puzzle for the weight of atoms. His discovery formed the base for the investigation of the tougher questions of nuclear physics: the nature of the nucleus and its forces.

This was the type of reasoning employed by James Chadwick in his 1932 discovery of the neutron. At the time, the atom was imagined to be made out of two types of fundamental particles, protons and electrons. The protons were far more massive, and clustered together in the atom's core, or nucleus.
