Atomic Theory I The Early Days ... In 1932, James Chadwick discovered a third type of subatomic particle, which he named the neutron. Neutrons help stabilize the protons in the atom's nucleus. Because the nucleus is so tightly packed together, the positively charged protons would tend to repel each other normally.

Development of the Atomic Theory ... James Chadwick (1891-1974) discovered the neutron in 1932. Chadwick was a collaborator of Rutherford's. Interestingly, the discovery of the neutron led directly to the discovery of fission and ultimately to the atomic bomb.

James Chadwick was born in Cheshire, England, on 20th October, 1891, the son of John Joseph Chadwick and Anne Mary Knowles. He attended Manchester High School prior to entering Manchester University ... Chadwick in this way prepared the way towards the fission of uranium 235 and towards the creation of the atomic bomb.

Democritus may not have been the first of the ancient Greeks to suggest an atomic theory, this distinction goes to his teacher Leucippus, but his name is often ... Lord Rutherford predicted the existence of the neutron is 1920. Walter Bothe obtained evidence of the neutron in 1930. However it was James Chadwick,

Further work by Chadwick revealed the existence of neutrons within the nucleus of the atom. The atomic number describes the number of protons in the nucleus. For a neutral atom this is also the number of electrons outside the nucleus.

Chadwick in collaboration with Rutherford realized that the atomic mass of most elements was about double the number of protons. For example, helium has an atomic mass of about 4 and only 2 protons. Electrons have minimal relative mass, so they postulated that a neutral particle may exist.
