Chief Gall (1840-1894) ... Chief Gall was said to have gained his unusual name when, as a starving orphan, he ate the gall bladder of an animal killed by a neighbour. He was one of Sitting Bull's main lieutenants at the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn.

This is a photograph of Chief Gall, who was of the Hunkpapa Dakota tribe, and served as a lieutenant under Crazy Horse. Chief Gall is thought to be the one who killed Colonel Custer at Little Bighorn. An old identification on the photograph says, "taken when hostile." The photograph was taken by David F. Barry, circa 1880.

Gall was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader. He played a big part in the Lakota war against the United States. He fought in Red Cloud’s War. Gall did not like the Fort Laramie Treaty. He became Sitting Bull’s military leader.
