Mathematics in China emerged independently by the 11th century BC. The Chinese independently developed very large and negative numbers, decimals, a decimal system, a binary system, algebra, geometry, trigonometry.

The traditional Chinese (brush form) system of numeration shares some of the best features of both Egyptian hieroglyphic and Greek alphabetic numerals. It is an example of a vertically written multiplicative grouping system based on powers of ten.

While China has for many uses adopted the Arabic numeral system familiar around the world, it also still uses its native Chinese character number system. The Chinese system is also a base-10 system, but has important differences in the way the numbers are represented.
