Circuit switching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In telecommunications, a circuit switching network is one that establishes a circuit (or channel) between nodes and terminals before the users may communicate, as if the nodes were physically connec...

Circuit switching is the most familiar technique used to build a communications network. It is used for ordinary telephone calls. It allows communications equipment and circuits, to be shared among users. Each user has sole access to a circuit (functionally equivalent to a pair of copper wires) during network use.

NETWORK; Circuit Switching vs. Packet Switching; ... While the majority of switched networks today get data across the network through packet switching, the concept of circuit switching should be no mystery to the average tech, let alone the tech wannabe. There are at least two good reasons to learn the difference.

Conventional cellular radio and landline telephony use circuit switching. Services like Cellular Digital Packet Data or CDPD, by contrast, employ packet switching. General Packet Radio Service GRPS, Bluetooth, and some aspects of 3G, also use packet switching.

Circuit-switched is often contrasted with packet-switched. Some packet-switched networks such as the X.25 network are able to have virtual circuit-switching. A virtual circuit-switched connection is a dedicated logical connection that allows sharing of the physical path among multiple virtual circuit connections.

In a circuit switched network there is a physical end to end connection created between the communicating parties. This connection is maintained for the duration of the call and is of a fixed data rate. The PSTN (telephone ... In packet switching there is no dedicated end to end connection between communicating parties.

In this type of network, a "permanent" circuit is set up between the originating and destination point for the duration of the call or transmission. This is in contrast to packet switched networks in which pieces of an individual message or transmission could - and likely do, take numerous paths from beginning to end.
