A function is a rule f that assigns to each input value t a unique output value f(t) called the value of function f at t. We use a circle of radius 1 centered at the origin (call such a circle a unit circle) as an aid in defining two functions known as circular functions.

The ranges of these circular functions, like their analogous trigonometric functions, are sets of real numbers. These functions are called circular functions because radian measures of angles are determined by the lengths of arcs of circles.

One nice interpretation of parametric equations is to think of the parameter as time (measured in seconds, say) and the functions f and g as functions that describe the x and y position of an object moving in a plane.

Since there is exactly one point P(x, y) for any angle θ, the relations cos θ = x and sin θ = y are functions of θ. Because they are both defined using a unit circle, they are often called circular functions.
