Cirrostratus may cover the sky as a continuous sheet with no features, but it often has a fibrous look. The cloud is so thin it is almost transparent. You can see the sun or moon through it much more clearly than you can through altostratus, and this is the simplest way to tell one cloud from the other.

Cirrostratus are sheet-like, high-level clouds composed of ice crystals. Though cirrostratus can cover the entire sky and be up to several thousand feet thick, they are relatively transparent, as the sun or the moon can easily be seen through them.

Cirrostratus clouds are very thin. The name cirrostratus means "curl" and "spread out" in Latin. Cirrostratus clouds are high altitude clouds. Cirrostratus clouds from when cool, dry air meets warm, moist air. These clouds are often indicators of rain.
