Finally, on July 4, 1817, Governor Dewitt Clinton broke ground for the construction of the canal. In those early days, it was often sarcastically referred to as "Clinton's Big Ditch". When finally completed on October 26, 1825, it was the engineering marvel of its day.

Clinton's Ditch fine eatery inside and out ... I had been meaning to get to Clinton's Ditch for a while. Opened in 2005, the former Stockade Tavern with its huge brick facade is an imposing -- albeit lonesome -- sight set just off Erie Boulevard close by Schenectady's historic Stockade district.
