I used to do rehab with people so I did a lot of closed chain exercises with them. Even now, most of my lower body exercises are closed chain because I have knee problems. They are safe and very effective as well.

Closed and open chain exercises provide somewhat different benefits. Closed chain exercises tend to emphasize compression of joints, which helps stabilize the joint, such as your knee during the upright stance phase of squats.
