Though the cockatiel is one of the most popular pet birds, they are not one of the better talking birds. We mention this only to give you a real idea of what you can expect. We have several birds that have learned to repeat words, words they oftentimes have heard from other birds.

Because of this ability to vocalize, some cockatiels can be taught to talk, to whistle tunes and to mimic sounds too. Although the sound of a cockatiel talking is more unclear and muffled when compared to the sound of larger parrots like an African gray, it's still incredibly entertaining to hear.

Spend as much time as you can sitting next to your bird's cage, talking to it and offering treats through the cage bars. Your cockatiel will slowly learn that you can be trusted. Do not put your hand inside of the cage and grab your bird.

Cockatiels can talk if the time has been invested into teaching them to do so. A talking Cockatiel sounds as if it is whistling syllables, they are somewhat understandable. Most talking Cockatiels are those that have been incorporated into a household and are stimulated by constant interaction and praise.
