Since oxygen atoms cannot react with themselves to produce anything except oxygen molecues or ozone molecules, oxygen does not burn. The nature of the reaction when oxygen forms ozone is different from the electron transfer which occurs in traditional oxidation.

Oxygen is reactive, but not inherently unstable. In other words, oxygen reacts with other substances, not with itself. Exposing a lit match to increasing pressures of oxygen will make it burn faster. ... Other substances also burn faster in higher pressures of oxygen, and some things that will not burn in normal room air...

Benefits Oxygen-enriched combustion can: Increase efficiency. The flue gas heat losses are reduced because the flue gas mass decreases as it leaves the furnace. There is less nitrogen to carry heat from the furnace.

Oxygen takes part in a lot of these reactions, but always as the oxidant, never the fuel. So a chemist would normally say that oxygen supports combustion, but that it does not burn. Now I am going to confuse you by taking you on an expedition to Titan, one of the moons of Saturn.

Title : The Combustibility of Materials in Oxygen-Helium and Oxygen-Nitrogen Atmospheres ... It was found that flames spread more rapidly in oxygen-helium mixtures than in comparable oxygen-nitrogen mixtures. The experimental data correlated well with the specific heats of the gas mixtures per mole of oxygen,
