The Gilded Flicker can be told from the "Red-shafted Flicker" by its yellow underwings and from the "Yellow-shafted Flicker" by its lack of red at the rear of the head, pale brown cap and pale gray face, a paler brown back, and the male sports a red rather than black whisker.

OMG…this would be fantastic. Flicker is my favorite woodpecker. I will be anxious to see if you get a family of them in your box. ... I don’t know why they call it common–I do not see common flickers at our place but I know they are supposed to be around. That’s great that you have one inspecting your owl box.
