It may well turn out that I'm wrong and they're right about the main issue, if copper nails kill plants, but I would like to base my opinion on more compelling evidence than this ... The copper nail technique is a often repeated myth. Copper nails will not kill trees or their root systems.

Many species of trees also will respond differently to this stress related to nails in their bases.

Copper nails/tacks driven into the trunks. Works over a few weeks. Kind of hard to find in some areas. Also some "weed and feeds" for lawns will kill trees but takes a while for the chemical to seep down to the roots.
