Random stuff about Paghat the Ratgirl's gardens. The crinkly green leaves of the Contorted Hazel, aka Henry Lauder's Walking Stick, slowly turn lemon-yellow in November. The tree will be bare in December, though still full of dangling catkins, its winter flowers.

Random stuff about Paghat the Ratgirl's gardens. He was briefly a film star in the early 1930s. Yet he's not well remembered now, & the tree baring his name is increasingly just called Corkscrew Hazel, though more than an occasional home owner has been known to give their corkscrew the pet name Harry.

ONE of the winter highlights in my garden is the gnarled silhouette of the "corkscrew hazel" - Corylus avellana 'Contorta'. Of the 10 species of hazel spread across the temperate areas of the Northern hemisphere, only one reaches tree-like proportions - the Turkish hazel (Corylus colurna). This tree has a fissured,

corkscrew hazel, Harry Lauder's walking stick My hazel tree is about 4 years old and this year something is plaguing it. It had some dead spots that I assumed was from the winter, but branches keep dying and the bark has little splits and inside is black. Does anyone know what this is?

With a mother called Wood, a father whose first name was Greenwood and a great-grandfather who ran a timber yard, Deakin claims he has "sap in his veins". With more twists than a corkscrew hazel, this enormously pleasurable "journey through trees" begins in his Suffolk farmhouse containing 323 beams ("a small...
