Short biography of a Spanish conqueror. As a result of their quandary, the Aztecs offered little resistance, and Cortes quickly defeated their army. On November 18, 1519, Cortes entered the Aztec capital and imprisoned Montezuma.

CORTES, Hernan, or Hernando, soldier, born in Medellin, Province of Estremadura, Spain, in 1485; died near Seville, 2 Dec., 1547. His parents, Martin Cortes and Catalina Pizarro Altamirano, were both of good family, but in reduced circumstances.

An alarm was sounded and the Aztecs attacked with fury. Hundred of soliders were killed or captured. Others, weighted down with the gold and silver loot they had collected, fell into the canals and drowned.

Soon after Cortez established headquarters in the capital, he learned that the Aztecs had plundered Veracruz. He seized Montezuma and forced him to surrender the attackers. Then he had them executed.
