Most couplets rhyme (aa), but they do not have to. There are several set forms of the couplet and a myriad of variations based on line length and meter.

Though rhyming like a Shakespearean sonnet (a quatrain followed by a couplet), the last six lines are broken into two triplets, like an Italian sonnet. Pretty cool.
