Europe, many top kennel clubs are no longer requiring cropped ears as part of the breed’s standard requirements. I have been working in the veterinary field for many years. I’ve worked in the same clinic for over 10 years and when I first started there, the doctor performed ear cropping on full-breed puppies.

Both my puppies were playing around that evening and the next jumping in and out of the pool with the collar on so I believe in this vet "hand" - the puppies ears came out beautiful. ... For instance, there is a purpose for cropping the ears other than appearance and it is not to protect from ear mites or other ailments.

I've heard that in the past they would crop puppies ears at the same time they docked the tail. (At a couple days old.) Is this true? If so, why do they not do that now? It sounds horrible but I would expect tail docking is VERY painful too and it is still paracticed today. ... Re: Cropping Newborn Puppies' Ears;

As advances in husbandry and medicine eliminated the need for short ears, cropping became more fashion than protective medicine. Surgeries were done under anesthesia, and the cuts tended to lengthen and become more graceful and aesthetic in shape.
