Gardenias will set their flower buds for the next year in the fall. So pruning in the summer will allow you to cut back some of the older wood without risking cutting away newly set buds.

Growing Gardenias ... Gardenia plants can be pruned as far back as you like, but you should keep a few important details in mind. First, cut plants back when they are dormant (dependant on where you live). This will allow the stems to "heal their wounds" because the plants aren't actively growing.

Hi, Sorry I don't really know much about gardenias since I only have the one. I cut it almost to the ground to get rid of the mold. It survived and is back to the original size . Looks really good this spring. The only drawback was that I only got one bloom last year.

I leave the shrub roses and those like the Flower carpet roses alone - don't cut at all. But the other roses I cut back almost to the ground every year in late November. They come back just fine each spring. I make sure to mulch well around the base.

In most instances, it is advisable to cut back each stem to a bud or branch. Selected buds that point to the outside of the plant are more desirable than buds pointing to the inside. By cutting to an outside bud, the new shoots will not grow through the interior of the plants or crisscross.

Allow your tulip, hyacinth, & daffodil foliage to turn brown and die back naturally. It is tempting to cut back the gangly leaves soon after the flowers bloom in spring. Resist this temptation! Your bulbs need their leaves to produce food and store energy for next year.

The advantage of planting perennials is that they come back year after year, saving expense and work. But what do you do between growing seasons, how do you cut back the dead and withered foliage, and should all perennials be cut back in the same way?
