You are probably already familiar with Pampas Grass, but don't overlook the Purple Fountain Grass, Maiden Grass, Zebra Grass, ... Grasses which die back completely in the winter can be rejuvenated by cutting the entire plant back to within about 3-4 inches of the ground in early spring (and composting the waste material).

Grass is different in that it has intercalary meristems which are meristematic regions found at the base of the grass blades. This is the reason lawn grass resumes normal growth after it has been mowed. So, cutting back the pampas grass works on the same principle.

A: I'm going to agree with you about the pampas grass. Cut it back to about 2 feet as soon as you like. As for the phormiums, there's a possibility they'll come back. But they'll take a while to grow to their current size (unless the plant is small).
