According to Paul Berben, a former prisoner, who wrote a book called "Dachau: 1933 - 1945: The Official History," there were 67,649 prisoners in Dachau and its sub-camps when the last census was taken on April 26, 1945, three days before the US 7th Army arrived to liberate the camp.

At first, the Dachau prisoners were quartered in the old factory buildings. Later, these buildings were torn down and a new "model camp" was built; construction of a new gate house began in 1936, followed by the building of new wooden barracks in 1937. The new camp was completely finished in 1938.

Upon arrival to Dachau, prisoners were instantly aware of their demise. All personal belongings were confiscated, their heads shaved and they were issued a number and a colored triangle (indicating to which prisoner groups they belonged).

August 15, 1938 - Dachau Camp Expanded - Dachau camp prisoners complete the construction of an SS military training base and an expansion of the Dachau concentration camp. Prisoners demolished the original concentration camp and the old World War I era munitions factory in 1937 to make way for the expansion.

The SS organized their own industries and businesses at Dachau. Also, prisoners were hired out in groups to armament manufacturers and housed near the factories. It is estimated that up to 37,000 prisoners worked almost exclusively on armaments.
