The Azure Damselfly is an extremely abundant insect which often overlaps in distribution and emergence period with other blue damselfly species, particularly the very similar and comparably numerous Common Blue Damselfly (which actually belongs to the separate Genus Enallagma).

Here we compare morphology of males of two Palaearctic damselfly (Odonata: Zygoptera) species, Coenagrion puella (Linnaeus, 1758) and Pyrrhosoma nymphula (Sulzer, 1776). C. puella has recently expanded its range from the north of England into Scotland.
