After much muttering & grumbling, it turned out that the problem was still with the “while” loop- even with the threading stuff working, the simple process of having to check a variable each loop cycle was running havoc with the CPU.

When I posted the poll about sock darning, 37% of respondents said they keep their holey socks stuffed at the back of the drawer because they don’t know how to darn. I used to do the same with my handknit socks.
