Sophocles died in the autumn of 406, when more than ninety years of age. All that is known concerning the manner of his death is the statement of his contemporary Phrynicus, that he was "fortunate in death, as he had been fortunate in life." The inventiveness of later ages produced various anecdotes on the subject.
