Hydrometer is an instrument used for determining the density of a liquid. It usually consists of a glass float with a long thin stem which is graduated. The glass float is a large hollow bulb which increases the buoyancy so that the hydrometer floats.

Buoyancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In physics, buoyancy (pronounced /ˈbɔɪ.ənsi/ ) is the upward force that keeps things afloat. The net upward buoyancy force is equal to the magnitude of the weight of fluid displaced by the bod...

This is another interesting experimental project about buoyancy and density. Eggs normally sink in tap water. By changing the density of water, you can make the egg float or submerge. This project makes an interesting and exciting display. ... Egg Flotation...

We can thus conclude that mercury must have a higher density than iron, which is true. THE LAW OF FLOTATION: A floating object displaces its own weight of the fluid in which it floats. BOUYANCY OF AIR AND GASES: Air or any gas surrounding an object also behaves like a liquid, and exerts buoyancy upon an object.

The specific gravity of a substance is defined as the ratio of the density of the substance to the density of water (1 gram/cm^3). This ratio is a convenient physical property since it has no units and is therefore independent of the system of measure you use to determine it. ... Data Sheet - Density and Buoyancy...
